Although women represent 55% of all undergraduate students in Spain, they only make up 25% of those in Engineering and Architecture. 51% of female undergraduate students are concentrated in the field of Law and Social Sciences, and only 14% study degrees related to Engineering, Architecture, and the Sciences.

One of the main causes of horizontal segregation is the lack of female role models until the 19th century, and the limited visibility of these role models in the 20th century: since then, many women have made discoveries that have changed history and have not been recognized for it, such as Henrietta Leavitt (who helped expand the size of the known universe with her studies on Cepheid variable stars), Rosalind Franklin (who photographed the structure of DNA for the first time), or Susan Jocellyn Bell (who discovered pulsars).

Events like today's are essential to make visible and normalize the participation of women in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and to awaken scientific vocations in girls and young women.
