The LIFE H2OLOCK project started on September 13th in the municipality of Lorca (Murcia), hosted by the Lorca Irrigation Community, a partner in the consortium.
This demonstration project aims to validate a novel concept for the sustainable management of water in agricultural reservoirs, with the ultimate goal of preserving freshwater by maintaining its quality (e.g., by preventing algae growth) while simultaneously generating renewable energy within these reservoirs. The designed solution will consist of a combination of modular floating covers with self-balancing floating blankets. Furthermore, flexible photovoltaic solar cells will be deployed on the blankets to generate renewable energy.
The implementation of this solution is expected to reduce water evaporation in ponds by up to 80-85%. Furthermore, it will contribute to achieving energy self-sufficiency in irrigated farms, thanks to the energy generated by photovoltaic cells integrated into the covered surface.
During the kick-off meeting, the consortium visited the previous installations of the solutions on smaller reservoirs. The consortium first visited a reservoir with modular floating covers, then the reservoir with photovoltaic installations, and finally, a reservoir with floating blankets. The final visit took place at the test reservoir located in Lorca. This test site, owned by CRL, has a surface area of 27,000 m² and is a regulating reservoir that distributes water to farmers in the region for horticulture. Adjacent to this test site, the consortium visited ARANA's manufacturing facilities. ARANA demonstrated the actual production line for both the floating modules and the blankets.
The H2OLOCK consortium is coordinated by the engineering firm ARADA INGENIERY. One of the consortium partners is ARANA WATER MANAGEMENT, an innovative SME that owns the patent for the modular floating solutions. The test sites will be managed by two Irrigation Communities, which will be partners in the consortium and early adopters of the technology, one in Spain, Comunidad de Regantes de Lorca and another in Portugal, the Palmela Town Council Winegrowers Association. Furthermore, the consortium is complemented by the research center Centro Tecnológico CTC (CTC) in Cantabria (ES), which will work with ARANA and ARADA on the design of the technology and its integration into the reservoirs and the SME, Global Factor International Consulting who will work on the sustainability and environmental assessment of the solution.

The solution designed will consist of a combination of modular floating covers with floating self-ballast blankets. Moreover, the photovoltaic flexible solar cells will be implemented on top of the blankets for renewable energy generation.
The implementation of the solution is expected to reduce water evaporation in AWR up to 80-85%. Moreover, it will contribute to achieving energetically energy self-sufficient agricultural irrigation exploitations with the energy generated by the PV cells integrated on the AWR covers.
